Within easy driving distance of North Base there are five golf courses to choose from for a round. Ranging from one of the world’s top 50 to a nine-hole country course that welcomes beginners, the region’s courses offer something for every golfer. And with North Base House providing the space for two foursomes to stay together, you have the ideal accommodation to make your Northland golfing getaway complete.  

When staying at North Base, Waitangi Golf Club is your most conveniently located course, where visitors are always welcome.  Just a 10-minute drive brings you to this stunning location on the Bay, the magnificent views complemented by well-groomed greens and fairways laid out among native trees home to native birds. The course is on land governed by the Waitangi National Trust that includes the Treaty Grounds. Players of all levels will enjoy playing Waitangi.

In Kerikeri you’ll find the Bay of Islands Golf Club course 30 minutes from North Base. A par 73 course, longer than Waitangi and with a full championship status yet very affordable, this is another friendly local club that invites affiliated and unaffiliated golfers of every level all year round. BOI prides itself on excellent winter going with its volcanic soil base.

For the serious player, Kauri Cliffs is crème of the crop and ranked among the best courses  in the world. The par 72 championship course overlooking Takau Bay and a 45 muinute drive north of Paihia. As well as the stunning views obtained from the Cliffside holes, you’ll also play through beautiful inland holes that wind through marsh, forest and farmland. Note: Kairi Cliffs is currently closed until 30 September 2020.

Driving inland from North Base you have the choice of two courses some 30 minutes’ drive away. Okaihau Golf Club, which has a great little 9-hole course in the rolling countryside where casual playing rates are just $20 per round.  Possibly the best golf course in Northland to introduce the family to the game while on a Bay of Islands holiday. The 18-hole Kaikohe Golf Club course is equally popular with locals and visitors alike, a great place to spend some time golfing with family and friends.

When visiting the Bay of Islands and staying at North Base, make sure you allow some time for a round of golf. Whether low-handicap club player or family group wanting an introduction and to have a go, there are plenty of accessible and affordable places where you can enjoy the holiday experience of a game of golf.
